Frequently Asked Questions

Reach us at roadkillart@roadkillart.us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Roadkill Art is known for our app and videos on how to know if roadkill is good to take for eating, how to skin a deer, how to process a deer and different roadkill recipes.

Roadkill, especially big game, is safe to eat and provides needed dietary requirements for good strong health. According to a study by Purdue University, wild game such as deer and elk have an ideal ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids, making game one of the healthiest Omega sources on earth. Also high in iron and zinc game meat supports the body’s vital functions including; growth, respiration, digestion, reproduction, metabolism and movement. https://www.purdue.edu/uns/html4ever/020204.Watkins.paleo.html

State Farm Insurance Co. as a definitive source for yearly roadkill counts stated 1.8 million auto insurance claims involving animal collisions were filed across the nation between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. Big game is usually acquired through hunting, but road collisions generate millions of pounds of available game meat. If we take State Farms number alone, 1.8M, and multiple it by the low number of 50 pounds this comes to 90M pounds of meat that can be consumed if gotten to while still fresh. The Roadkill Art App is designed for reporting roadkill so the millions of pounds of game meat can be consumed and utilized. Take a minute report what you come across, help make available any of the 90 million pounds of game meat Americans create annually.

Yes, Roadkill Art teaches survival skills. You can learn how to fish, frog gig or hunt in any of our videos. You will also learn the value of roadkill that it is edible and healthy meat.

Yes, people like to process their own meat if they can, but big game needs to be hung. If there is no place to hang a deer, elk or moose it is best to take it to a professional processor. The videos we post teaching how to process deer, get the most views, evidence people want to do their own processing.

Game species raised on farms in the USA under appropriate regulations can be sold in the United States. Wild game species that can be legally hunted under federal or state regulatory authority, cannot be sold, but can be harvested for personal consumption. Game meat acquired from roadkill is illegal to take in Texas, but can be taken in 49 states as long as state roadkill rules and regulations are followed. State roadkill rules and regulation can be found in the Roadkill Art app, it is illegal to sell roadkill in the USA.

Each state has primary responsibility and authority over the hunting of wildlife that resides within state boundaries. If you have questions about the harvest of wild game species, contact your state fish and wildlife agencies, natural resources or the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for federal regulations.

According to State Farm Insurance November is the month with the highest amount of animal collisions with an estimate for 2023 of 297,000 collisions. As the largest insurer of cars in the U.S., State Farm reports over 1.8 million auto insurance claims were filed across the industry from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 involving animal collisions.

Yes roadkill aids in weight loss because it is a source of protein. Protein tells the body to make more fullness hormones like peptide YY, GIP and GLP-1. It also tells the body to make fewer hunger hormones like ghrelin. Protein in your diet helps you stay full and eat less.

Studies have also shown that a higher protein diet can help boost your metabolism and preserve muscle mass, two factors important for maintaining a healthy weight.

Each state cleans up their roadkill, which trickles down to cities and counties who decide how. In the state of South Carolina according to the state’s Department of Natural Resources the deer population is about 750,000. In the city of Spartanburg, SC the Department of Transportation is responsible for keeping interstates and roads clean in their city and county limits. But with 42,000 miles of roads and bridges to maintain, Spartanburg transportation officials say they need help removing roadkill, which is the case in many states, cities and counties.

You can help the Department of Transportation and the police who lack man power these day for roadkill removal, in your state by reporting roadkill in the Roadkill Art App. It is dangerous to get out of the car on major highways to make reports but if it is safe, pull over and make a report without leaving your car. Most important for officials is marking the location, the first step to making a roadkill report.

Yes the Red Wolf's in captive facilities are not fed dog food or nice juicy Mc Donald's burgers. They are treated and raised as though they are living  in the wild, fed roadkill by facilitators.

There are 44 captive breeding facilities for the Red Wolf nationwide, which are a vital element of red wolf recovery. (See the link for locations) Currently, there is a captive population of approximately 230 wolves. These wolves help to ensure the survival and genetic diversity of the species.

https://redwolves.com/newsite/learn-about-red-wolves/captive-breeding-facilities/

The Red Wolf is one of the most endangered canids in the world today and is classified as "critically endangered" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. The Red Wolf is listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act, except in a portion of northeastern North Carolina where it was reintroduced as a nonessential experimental population at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. This population is the only known wild population of Red Wolves. Today, approximately 20 are known to be in the wild.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established a captive breeding program for the Red Wolf in 1973. Biologists began to remove remaining Red Wolves from the wild in an effort to save the species from extinction. Over a period of six years, 400 wolf-like canids were captured and of those, 17 were Red Wolves and only 14 of those successfully bred in captivity. By 1980, the Red Wolf was considered extinct in the wild.

If you are a Roadkill Art App member and there is a facility near you stop in and introduce yourself let them know you will help feed the wolves by reporting roadkill.

Your standard grocery stores; Costco, Walmart, Publix, Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, do not usually carry goose. The best way to get the Christmas Goose is to order it from an on-line company, there are many. Do not forget to order it in a timely manner so you have it at least 2 days before you plan on cooking it.

Roadkill Art Celebrates 'National Roadkill Day' september 25

As the official sponsor of National Roadkill Day, we celebrate the day by cooking game meat in order to bring awareness to the value of roadkill as a food source. We give out samples to many who have never tried game meat or roadkill. Once its learned roadkill is edible, many animals left to vultures can be picked up instead of passed by. Big game can provide as much as 50 lbs of meat, enough for multiple meals. Roadkill Art invites you to celebrate with us this coming Thursday Sept 25, 2025.

Driving through Scenic Wildlife Preserves and Parks

Spring break and Easter are times for family outings and vacations with families visiting Americas beautiful drive through parks, like the East Bay Regional Park, a 49 mile scenic drive in California's San Francisco Bay Area or North Carolina's 469 mile Blue Ridge Parkway. With acres of land having high amounts of abundant wildlife, animals roam and run freely. Keep a look out for animals near the road or wooded areas where they can run out of any time. Slow down and be careful to avoid collisions. Have your Roadkill Art app open ready to make a report, marking animal crossings. Members love to see live wildlife, there is a rating choice at the end of your report to pick titled: It’s NOT roadkill he is alive, be careful not to hit him, he's near the road. Three reports and we send you a tee!

Who can take roadkill in Alaska?

The Alaska new Roadkill Salvage Program allows eligible organizations and groups to salvage roadkill animals in their areas after being notified by Troopers or other law enforcement agencies. Registered participants must respond within 30 minutes of notification and remove the entire animal from the roadway, then the participant can process the animal for consumption.

Alaska salvage teams and nonprofits can register at: https://dps.alaska.gov/AWT/Roadkill.

Requested information can now be easily submitted online and participants will be quickly notified if a salvageable animal is available in their area. Every year hundreds of moose and other animals are unfortunately killed on Alaska’s roadways; with the new Roadkill Salvage Program, Alaska will keep their roadways clean and help supply meat to Alaskans soup kitchens. Previously Alaskan law required all roadkill go to soup kitchens, the roadkill door has now opened to all Alaskan citizens.
