Canada Now In the Roadkill Art App

The Roadkill Art App has officially expended into Canada. 'Roadkill Reports' can be made from anywhere in the country and viewed by clicking on a location marker or checking the 'List View'. For US app Member's set your distance wheel between 4,000-5,000 miles to view reports coming in from Canada.

Canada is home to six deer species. The White Tailed Deer, the most widespread species, found particularly in forests and suburban edges. The Mule Deer found in the west, Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC, identified by large ears, white rump patch, and a bounding gait. The Moose the largest of the deer family found in boreal forests and wetlands. The Elk or Wapiti also large and very social animals, found in the west, with dark, shaggy manes and light brown bodies. The Caribou found in the north and in some alpine areas, both males and females grow antlers. And the Black Tailed Deer a smaller cousin of the mule deer, commonly found in the coastal forests of BC.

Canada is made up of 10 providences: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador. There are also 3 territories above the providences: Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Wildlife is owned and managed by the government, before collecting and salvaging roadkill you must contact authorities in a province or territory for permission and regulations.

There are six overpasses in Banff, Alberta

Banff National Park in Alberta has turned its wildlife crossings into a global example with more than 40 structures. There are 6 overpasses covered with vegetation: Redearth Creek, Castle Mountain, Wolverine, Copper (pictured), Healy, and Fairviewand . There are 38 tunnels under the Trans-Canada Highway. The structures allow animals such as grizzly bears, elk, deer, wolves and others to cross without risk from traffic. Banff National Park has the most wildlife crossing structures and highway enclosure fencing in a single location on the planet. Report live animals near the road in the Roadkill Art app, we are a community that helps officials locate animal crossings.

Roadkill is Rising

Canada has rising roadkill numbers, with Alberta reporting its worst, (best for app member's) year on record in 2025 with over 7,400 roadkill incidents.

May and June are peak months for collisions, with deer being the primary concern in May and elk in June. May and June collectively account for 29% of all wildlife collisions. The risk of collisions is 2.7 times higher compared to the January-February period, 79%, of these collisions occur between 8 PM and 9 AM, coinciding with dusk and dawn when many large mammals are most active.

Roadkill can be taken in Alberta but a titled "Permit to Possess Found Dead Wildlife" is required from Alberta Fish and Wildlife, call 310-0000. Pictures is the most notorious stretch for roadkill Highway 3 (the Crowsnest Highway), particularly between Lundbreck and the B.C. border.
